SOLAR WATER HEATER SYSTEMS for
INLAND WATERWAY BOATS
This shows a narrowboat with an extensive solar array capable of powering all onboard electrics & water heating
Some habitable boats operated on inland waterways have outboard engines mainly to reduce draft. Others are conventional inboard marine diesels.
Inboard engines will usually be coupled to a boat boiler. We have TWO solar water heating solutions for this type of craft - one running at 220v for boats having at least 600W of solar panels and another using a 12v heating element for those with less than 600w.
Outboard engines do not have an engine heat exchanger and therefore do not have a marine boiler that uses that. This means either having cold water or, until now, installing a gas instant water heater.
Gas is explosive and dangerous. An undetected leak and you lose your boat and maybe your life. We recognise that it is the only practical solution for onboard cooking and is safe as long as the installation is technically sound, and the utmost care is taken to avoid leaks. Gas water heaters we regard as deeply unwise on a boat. They are also heavy consumers of gas so two bottles are essential and the risk of a leak is too great for comfort.
We offer OFF GRID SOLAR SYSTEM solutions that use surplus solar power to heat your water SAFELY and FREE
